Original Pantograph Pattern

Two pattern pieces for the Superfine Turbine were found at a yard sale sometime before late 1999, in Orange County, California.
The reportedly came from an retired engineer who worked for a contractor that made scale models for Mattel in the 1960's and '70's.

Superfine Turbine Patterns

This photo was provided by the pawn shop which offered the finished Superfine Turbine for sale on eBay in late 1999.
After several iterations of the bids not meeting the reserve, the finished pattern was sold privately in early 2000.
The unfinished pattern was recovered by the person who found them at the yard sale and was sold at a later date.

Raw Pattern

Two rough wooden models are made, one is destined to be the finished pattern and the other is held as a back up, should the first
attempt not be successful. The patterns are scaled four times larger than the size of the finished toy and are known as "4 Ups".
These two photos are from the archives of the modeling contractor that made the patterns for Mattel in 1970.

Finished Pattern

The finished wood and resin pattern is the actual manufacturing pattern which was pantographed to create the casting mold (tool) for the car.

The pattern consists of a number of pieces. The body and base are diecast. The rear door, shelf unit and the seat are combined into a single plastic piece.

The rear of the shelf piece shows the toy number, 6004 and the original name of "Turbo Wagon".
