Maserati Mistral (1969)

This two-seater coupe is accurately based on the Maserati Mistral that was produced in Italy from 1963 through 1970.  The real Mistral (the name refers to a cool wind that blows toward the coast in the south of France) is one of the most sought-after prizes for collectors of classic Italian sports car.

Only 948 Mistrals (830 coupes and 125 spyders) were produced.  The car sported a 245 hp fuel-injected in-line six-cylinder engine that was based on the engine that powered Manuel Fangio to Maserati's one and only F1 World Championship in 1957.  Performance was impressive: the Mistral was capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 140 mph!  Perhaps more impressive is the whole package: the Mistral is a stunning example of beautiful Italian styling and sex appeal!

The Hot Wheels version of the Maserati Mistral coupe features silver-painted headlights, "chrome" bumpers, the signature large rear window, and a forward opening bonnet over the six-cylinder power plant.  The designers did a marvelous job of reproducing the beautiful lines of the original car!

All Mistrals were produced at Mattel's HK plant and feature blue-tinted "glass" and bearing-type chrome mag wheels.  Interiors are either white or brown.  The tail lights were painted red.

The Mistral was produced in nine different Spectraflame colors as listed in the chart below.  At least one car has been found in what appears to be light blue.

Light blue or a light spray of blue?

An interesting variation of the Mistral is the black roof version.  Aqua Mistrals with black roofs are the most common of these, although they still are far less common than cars with plain roofs in most of the colors.
